Bulldozer, codename for the all new processor core from AMD that has beaten the world in CPU speed and set a new one, all of 8.429MHz. That is the extensively over clocked frequency of the processor. The normal frequency is 3.6GHz. This is the future of computing as we know it. No surprise coming from AMD as these are the people who introduced us to Accelerated Processing Units earlier. The bulldozer, unlike others, is not an improved version of the K10, it has been build from scratch. It’s all new technology. The CPUs based on the bulldozer cores were introduced in October 2011. For the server segment AMD released the sixteen core Opteron processor codenamed Interlagos as well as a scaled down four to eight core version codenamed Valencia.
The bulldozer core supports all the instruction sets used by the Intel processors besides supporting new instruction sets proposed by AMD. This makes this core a very powerful and future ready component for any processor. There is a lot of scope for over clocking this CPU for the enthusiast, the gamer. The operating voltage rating is 0.775V to 1.425V. The processors are going to be shipped with 8M of L3 cache which is shared across the 8 cores (16Mb for the 16core versions of the CPU). The sharing will allow better faster communication between cores. Memory support for DDR3 is provided. Ranging from 3.6GHz to 3.9GHz this CPU will be backward compatible with Socket AM3+.
AMD has started shipping the next bunch of Bulldozer based processors namely the quad core FX-4170 (with a base clock speed of 4.2GHz) and the 6 core FX-6200 with a frequency of 3.8GHz. When this was announced it was also announced that the existing Bulldozer core based would see a price reduction. So now you can have one of these cutting edge processors for as low as $105. The HD video rendering, 3D gaming experience, extensive multitasking everything is set to become that much simpler and crisp.
